Victim Migration: Dynamically Adapting Between Private and Shared CMP Caches

Future CMPs will have more cores and greater onchip cache capacity. The on-chip cache can either be divided into separate private L2 caches for each core, or treated as a large shared L2 cache. Private caches provide low hit latency but low capacity, while shared caches have higher hit latencies but greater capacity. Victim replication was previously introduced as a way of reducing the average ...

Analytical Modeling of Partially Shared Caches in Embedded CMPs

In modern ubiquitous devices, optimizing shared lastlevel caches (LLCs) in embedded chip multi-processor systems (CMPs) is critical due to the increased contention for limited cache space from multiple cores. We propose cache partitioning with partial sharing (CaPPS) to reduce LLC contention and improve utilization. CaPPS can reduce the average LLC miss rate by 25% and 17% as compared to baseli...

Comparison of the Performance of Two Service Disciplines for a Shared Bus Multiprocessor with Private Caches

In this paper, we compare two analytical models for evaluation of cache coherence overhead of a shared bus multiprocessor with private caches. The models are based on a closed queuing network with different service disciplines. We find that the priority discipline can be used as a lower-level bound. Some numerical results are shown graphically.

Two proposals for the inclusion of directory information in the last-level private caches of glueless shared-memory multiprocessors

In glueless shared-memory multiprocessors where cache coherence is usually maintained using a directory-based protocol, the fast access to the on-chip components (caches and network router, among others) contrasts with the much slower main memory. Unfortunately, directory-based protocols need to obtain the sharing status of every memory block before coherence actions can be performed. This info...

Caches as Filters: A Unifying Model for Memory Hierarchy Analysis

This paper outlines the new caches-as-filters framework for the analysis of caching systems, describing the functional filter model in detail. This model is more general than those introduced previously, allowing designers and compiler writers to understand why a cache exhibits a particular behavior, and in some cases indicating what compiler or hardware techniques must be employed to improve a...
